Our second month in Syros with Boundless Life was nothing short of amazing. February brought a shift in the weather, with temperatures dropping for part of the month, but that only made our time on the Greek island of Syros feel cozier.

We had another month filled with new experiences (both at the Education Center and on the island), community bonding, and exciting adventures. There was also the mid-cohort break, a week of no classes, giving us more time to explore and connect.

👀 Curious about how our journey began? Check out our first month in Syros here!

Boundless Life Activities During February

A Day in the Life of a Trailblazer

During the month of February, my girls and I created a video for Instagram capturing a day in the life of a Trailblazer. I had so much fun attending their class the entire day.

It was great to experience the class dynamic, follow the academic sessions for math, see their work on their Boundless quest (Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), follow the endeavor time with a parent giving a class on investing, but most of all, watch them have fun!

Mid-cohort Break and Unexpected Closures

Although the teens learned and experienced a lot during the month of February, it was also a short month.

First of all, there was the mid-cohort break, something that happens for all cohorts and Boundless locations. It gives families the time to explore a bit more of the location or travel to some other places they want to discover.

But, there was also an unexpected event. At the beginning of the month, a series of earthquakes near Santorini caused a temporary closure of all schools in the Cyclades, including Boundless Life on Syros. It was a precautionary measure, and although we could feel some of the earthquakes, everything remained safe, and we were able to resume normal activities shortly after.

Cozy Moments and Community Gatherings

Meeting the Other Families

We said it before and we will say it again. One of the things we love the most about our Trailblazer experience is the community and the connections we make both as parents and our girls.

As the weather was a bit colder in February, we found comfort in spending quality time indoors. We invited some Boundless families over for dinner at our house, which turned into fun-filled evenings with lots of games and laughter. The girls even had a couple of sleepovers at our house with some of their Trailblazer friends and siblings.

There was also a karaoke evening for kids and parents at Barrio (a local bar), a performance at the beautiful Apollon Theater, a lot of us attended, art classes for Hanne and me, and lots of cozy meals in some of our favorite restaurants in Syros.

But one of the most fun events was definitely the birthday party organized by a family for their daughter turning 16. They created a prom-themed party. It was amazing to see all the teens dressed up and looking so grown up!

Carnival Preparations & Tsiknopempti Feast

As February came to a close, excitement for the upcoming carnival started to build. Carnival in Syros is a big event, and this year, the carnival will be celebrated on the first weekend of March. But there are a lot of events leading up to the big weekend.

We celebrated Tsiknopempti, a traditional Greek feast that marks the beginning of carnival festivities. We dressed up, played games, participated in traditional Greek dances, and enjoyed a day of fun at the EC. It was a fantastic way to immerse ourselves in Greek culture and get ready for the lively celebrations ahead in March.

For the carnival, Boundless Life works with a local carnival team. So, in the second half of February, we also started preparing ourselves. Costumes were being measured and made, and we started rehearsing for the dance. Can’t wait for the carnival to start!

Syros Island Adventures

Hiking to Secluded Beaches in Apano Meria

During the month of February, we ventured out for some breathtaking hikes. Our first hike was still in warm weather (the kids went in the water), but even when the colder temperatures arrived, we kept going on a hike every Sunday.

Together with other families, we explored around Ermoupoli and towards the secluded beaches in Apano Meria, the remote northern part of Syros. The rugged landscapes and untouched beauty of the area made for an unforgettable experience. Syros has so much to offer beyond its charming main town.

Mid-cohort Break & Taking Care of Rumi

February also brought the mid-cohort break, giving everyone a chance to relax and recharge. Most families went off the island and out of the Schengen zone, but we have European passports, so we stayed on the island. We went with some other families to Plakostroto, an amazing restaurant in the north of Syros, and had some families over at our place for food, drinks, and music.

During this week, we also had the pleasure of taking care of Rumi, the dog of one of the Boundless families. The girls were thrilled to have a little dog in the house. It was a fun experience, and added an extra dose of joy to our days.

Looking Ahead: March & Carnival Festivities

We can’t believe we are already in our last month of our Syros cohort! Time flies by when you are having fun! And that’s what March promises to be as well. With the carnival just around the corner, our time here will be full of color, music, and excitement. We’re looking forward to even more cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and fun times with our Boundless Life community.
