Time to Grow: Acquiring New Skills in the New Year

July 17, 2023

Fresh Start, Fresh Goals: The New Year represents a symbolic fresh start, making it an ideal time to set new goals and embark on learning new skills. The energy and motivation associated with the beginning of a year can provide the necessary boost to initiate and sustain the learning process. And our 3-month Boundless Life Experience in January-March is not only the perfect time to acquire a new skill but also the perfect place - as all our destinations offer a range of opportunities to not only sample but begin to master a skill that could become a lifelong passion.

In the second instalment of a two-part Blog, we’ll be sharing with you just some of the learning and personal growth opportunities parents have access to across our Boundless Life locations. You can click here to read the ‘Kid’s edition’.

We all have something to learn

Education is at the heart of Boundless Life. This naturally means the focus is often on the Boundless Education programme and how it is helping our children become global citizens of the future. But learning never stops because, after all, “Every day’s a school day!” Parents spending time in Boundless locations have also been presented with - and created - wonderful opportunities for self-development. These come in all different forms - from learning a practical skill right through to learning a little more about one’s self.

Making a Connection

Arriving to start a Boundless cohort is a bit like the first day of school. It’s exciting but everyone is a little nervous to begin with. Our Pre-Arrival webinars are a great early ice-breaker as families can begin to put faces to the names of people they will be sharing the Boundless Life with. However, nothing beats spending time getting to know one another face-to-face. This is why the Boundless Connections event is so valuable.

Once the kids are nicely settled in at the Education Centre - and forming their own special connections with their peers and educators - parents get together with the Boundless Crew and, over a coffee, share as little or as much as they want about their background, their reasons for choosing Boundless and their hopes and aspirations for their stay and beyond. Our families come from all over the world. They may have very different backgrounds, cultures, and sometimes even languages. What typically unites them is their ‘why?’. Common thematic threads include:

  • Feeling like they were on a hamster wheel / stuck in a Groundhog Day-esque cycle and wanting to “break free”
  • Questioning the value of traditional schooling in our fast-changing world
  • Wanting to invest in spending quality time as a family and seeing if you can have a life you don’t need a vacation from!

When the opening Connections event was first established we were honestly not sure whether it would extend past a simple ‘Meet and Greet’ session, but it has quickly become a significant, impactful, and often moving event on our calendar. So much so that a closing Connections event has been added. This provides parents with an opportunity to reflect back and share their key takeaways. Were their opening goals achieved? It is very common for this event to be emotionally charged and a box of tissues is always on stand-by. This probably sounds a little corny to those who have not yet experienced the Boundless Life, but ask anyone who has attended a closing Connections event and they will tell you that it’s a beautifully bittersweet experience.

Yoga!

Weekly yoga and wellness sessions are included for parents across all our locations. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a master yogi, this a great time to down-tools, stretch, breath, reflect and relax. In Syros, these sessions take place outside on a lido so the sound of the Aegean lapping against the shore will be the soundtrack to your gentle exercise. Many parents cool off by diving straight into the sea afterwards! In Bali, sessions open with a blissful and spiritual ‘cleansing ceremony’.

Practical Application

Boundless cohorts offer a range of courses and workshops that mean parents leave having learned a new practical skill or supercharged an existing one. These include photography, sailing, and also language lessons to allow parents to begin to confidently converse in the language of their chosen destination.

Culture Club

The Boundless Life is one that promotes and enables cultural immersion with the luxury of enough time to truly absorb this in a meaningful way. You may find yourself ‘Cooking with the Crew’ in Sintra and preparing classic Portuguese dishes to share in one tasty communal feast. Or perhaps learning how to craft traditional Balinese offerings that are used for blessings. Perhaps you want to become an olive oil connoisseur in Tuscany? You may even learn some traditional Greek dance moves to try out on the ‘Parents’ Night Out’ on Mykonos 😉.

Community-Curated Learning

One of the most wonderful things to emerge from our global communities is the willingness with which parents have spontaneously and generously given their time to each other to share their own special skills and passions for the betterment of all. It would be impossible to detail them all here, but we have had master sales people share their techniques, Crypto Clubs, social media content creation tips, conscious parenting workshops and even regular ‘Kampfire chats’ led by Olympian and master of connection, the wonderful Jaime Komer. The latter has seen people open up about topics close to their hearts and unburden themselves in a safe space. It has featured laughter and tears, barriers being broken down and community and family bonds built and strengthened. It is often in these quieter moments that the less tangible benefits of Boundless living can be found. In connection. In community. In kindness and mutual respect. In what it is to be human.
