Top 3 Reasons to Visit Syros “off-season” (Spoiler alert: it’s never “off”!)

Syros, the capital of the Greek Cyclades island group, has a heart that beats all year round to the rhythm of the port town of Ermoupoli.

Unlike so many of its famous tourist-laden neighbours, Syros is an all-year-round island. When the tourists have mostly returned to their 9-5's, you have a wonderful opportunity to make Syros your island base, and really discover what makes this place tick relentlessly throughout the year.

Winter and early spring are the temperate seasons when our families can discover Syros in its purest form and really integrate with its amazing local community during our Jan-Mar 3-month Boundless Experience.

Water-based sports and activities can also be easier to navigate - with gentler and more predictable sea breezes to allow for smooth sailing.

Check out our Top 3 reasons for checking out Syros in the winter and early spring.

1. Unique events and experiences that capture the spirit of Syros like the colourful carnival celebrations and parades in the main square or the bustling activity of the shipyard as ships are prepared for another season of work out at sea.

The families who stayed with us for our last Jan-Mar cohort had the most amazing opportunity to actually take part in the annual three-day celebrations - including a masquerade party at a historic textile factory, wearing full costumes for an epic parade through the capital, and a whole lot of merriment! Boundless can’t wait to share these unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences with our next Jan-Mar cohort families.

“3 months may seem like a long time to live on an island, but it flies by with the combination of maintaining our daily routines and the addition of so many new experiences organised by the local team.

These include hikes that familiarise us with the geography and history; Greek dancing, fishing, and unique holiday events like Carnival that teach us about local traditions; language lessons that allow us to communicate more respectfully with locals; and self-arranged play dates, dinners, beach visits, and meet-ups at the playground or in the square that create community among both Boundless and local families.

We did NOT want to leave this beautiful place!”

2. Less keen on heat? Syros benefits from a mild Mediterranean climate during the winter, with temperatures averaging around 15-20 degrees Celsius (59-68 degrees Fahrenheit). Jan through March is a great time to fully discover all that Syros has to offer with cooler temperatures that are great for exploring the many hiking paths. No stepping over sunbathers when you stroll along the beaches either. And don’t worry, there will still be PLENTY of sunshine!

Our young Explorers still get to take part in one of our most popular Extracurricular Activities: Sailing! Boundless Crew member, Giannis (John) has sailed competitively at the highest level and will take complete beginners and transform them into confident sailors over the course of three months.

3. Winter is an excellent time to immerse yourself in the local culture of Syros. The island's residents go about their daily lives, giving you the opportunity to interact with them, visit traditional taverns, and experience the genuine hospitality of the locals.

The quieter time of year represents a unique opportunity to really immerse yourself in the culture and community of Syros. The pace is slower and more laid back. With much lower tourist volumes you get a better feel for real island life. By the time you leave, you will be on first-name terms with the locals who will treat you like family.

There are also, of course, options to visit other islands too! Syros is well connected to other local islands by both plane and ferry.

So, what are you waiting for? Syros is calling you! Arrange a call with us to learn more and secure your spot to start 2024 with a Greek Odyssey!

At Boundless Life we build a collection of thoughtfully designed communities located in beautiful destinations around the world comprised of private homes, co-working spaces, a education system based on experiential learning and locally adapted recreational hubs where like-minded families can develop connections, work, sustainably explore different parts of the world and be immersed in the local cultures.
